The French boys (who are actually English/Malaysian) are setting our August run, in a place they know very well, so we can expect some fun trails and scenic viewpoints!

The run-site is further in – you need to turn right onto an earth/gravel road and continue straight for a bit more than 1km, until you see some hashmobiles.
The plantation workers were levelling some bumpy/muddy bits last Saturday, so it should be good for this Sunday.

This Waze link should take you almost all the way to the run-site (just continue straight a little bit more), but if you put the same coordinates into Google Maps it will take you the wrong way, past an orchid farm.

Detailed Driving Directions
• Get to Ulu Yam Baru any way
The B23 Jalan Hulu Yam Baru-Batu Caves road is a good way from most starting points, but you can also go through Serendah (use the Rawang or Sungei Buaya exit from the N-S highway) and Antara Gapi
• Zero your tripmeter at the bridge over Sungei Liam, just before you enter Ulu Yam Baru town.
• At the t-junction immediately after the bridge, turn LEFT towards town.
• At 0.9km, in the middle of town, turn RIGHT onto the B113 towards Genting Highlands.
• Pass the Balai Polis on your left.
• At about 2.1km the road bends sharply to the left.
TURN RIGHT HERE AT THE SIGN ‘LADANG BATANG KALI’ (small tarmac road)
• Then take the first right, before the small estate manager’s house, into the estate (earth track) and continue about 1.3 kilometres to the run-site – this is about 300 metres past the run-site we’ve used before.

The track is OK, but some parts are a bit tricky for low-clearance sports cars, so we suggest you leave the Ferrari at home and bring the Perodua instead.

The runsite has plenty of parking near a small stream.

A couple of years ago, some families didn’t want to drive to this beautiful, remote run-site, but the road has improved enormously, and is now easily drivable in any kind of car. The track is now entirely either concrete or gravel, with no tricky bits.

It’s going to be a great run, and the hares have spent a lot of effort clearing the cut-throughs to connect a trail suitable for the Junior Hash – initially with parangs, then with secateurs, and finally with a dustpan and brush to ensure that the trail is clean enough to eat your lunch off 🙂
Actually, the trail has a very wild & jungly feel to it, and has a 100 metre river section on the short trail (2km) and a 700 metre river section on the long trail (4km) – if the weather is hot as usual, then the stream will be perfect for cooling down. The stream is mostly around 30cm deep, but 60cm in spots, and there are some optional little swimmable bits on the outside of some bends.

As usual, there will be hotdogs and cool drinks served down by the river when you finish, so just send one person back to the car for some cash, or carry it with you in a ziplock bag (you’re going to get wet!!!).

Directions

The parking is near a small Hindu temple, set among the buildings of an abandoned palm oil estate, close to a river.
So we park at the top, and then you can walk forward and follow the track left down to a river crossing, where we plan to set up the registration desk, hotdog/drinks stall and do the circle.

As with most run-sites, it’s easy to get there if you let Waze or Google Maps help you navigate.

The last 3.5km of the driving route, after leaving the main road and passing Rasa Chinese Cemetery, is really good now.

This is one of our favourite run-sites, with a spacious lawn next to a calm little river to cool down in. It’s a private camp-site, so please have RM5 ready to pay for parking.

You can also rent a tube for playing in the river, for RM10 – please make sure your kids know that you need to pay before borrowing them.

If you want to stay overnight but don’t fancy camping, there are other chalets, home-stays and eco-resorts in the Ulu Rening area . They vary from cheap & simple chalets to posh chalets (e.g. Huda’s Haven), to secluded mansions that sleep 10 and have private swimming pools.

Traditional directions

From Batu Caves:
– Take the B57 Hulu Yam Baharu road.
– Drive past the Hulu Yam dam and reservoir.
– After crossing a bridge, you’ll hit a t-junction – turn left into Hulu Yam town
– In the centre of town, turn right towards Genting Highlands on B113 and set trip meter to zero.
– 4.4 km Traffic lights, Shell station on Left, turn RIGHT onto B114.
– 5.9 km Turn LEFT (signposted Air Panas Hulu Tamu).
– 10.7 km (T-junction in village by mosque) Turn LEFT
– 10.9 km Turn RIGHT
– 11.2 km Take the next left, before a bridge
– drive around 100m to the run-site

Via Rawang or Serendah (which can be reached in many ways), including via the N-S highway:
– Continue north on Highway 1 ( Old Ipoh Road ) through Serendah to Batang Kali.
– At traffic light in Batang Kali (just after police station on right), turn RIGHT onto B113, and reset your trip-meter.
– 1.9 km At traffic lights (Shell station on right) turn LEFT onto B114.
– 3.4 km Turn LEFT (signposted Air Panas Hulu Tamu).
– 8.2 km (T-junction in village by mosque) Turn LEFT

– 8.7 km Take the next left, before a bridge

This is always a reliable run-site – nice and secluded and shady, with little streams and plenty of forest trails nearby.

There will be a long trail, exactly 4km, and a slightly shorter trail.

Run-site: Cherandong Waterfalls, near KKB
Travel Time: at least an hour from KL/PJ – consider stopping for lunch on the way

This is one of our favourite swimming spots, and the Koh family always set their runs here – their last one was exactly six months ago.

It’s at a campsite right next to a fun stretch of river, which can flow quite fast in the middle, although the stream had been re-shaped last time we were here, so who knows what to expect?

Use Waze or Google Maps to go to “Cherandong Waterfall Trailhead” – this is on tarmac, and is on Jalan Kampung Buluh Telur, 44000, Kuala Kubu Baru, Selangor.
This is on the right (East) side of the river – make sure that Waze doesn’t take you to the closest road on the other side of the river!
Then follow our KLJHHH bunny signs (hopefully!) to take the trail on the left, which stays close to the Selangor river for 1 or 2 km further to our run-site, where there is plenty of parking. This trail is a little bumpy in parts, but suitable for normal cars – just take it slowly and carefully, and you’ll have no problem.

Tell your navigator to guide you towards Kuala Kubu Baru (or use the link above)
• At the crossroads on the old Ipoh road by the Rasa Chinese Cemetary, set your tripmeter to zero
• After almost 1km further (towards KKB), turn RIGHT to Ampang Pecah
• Continue on Jalan Ampang Pecah for 5.5km
• When your tripmeter reads about 6.5km, just before a bridge, turn RIGHT
• You should see the DAM cafe and DAM fishing pond on your right
• Drive another 2.3km
• When your tripmeter reads about 8.8km, you’ll see a parking area on your LEFT. Turn in, and then follow the driving track down to the LEFT, which soon turns right to run alongside the river
• Follow the hash signs to the run-site, at which point your trip-meter should read something close to 10km
