The short run is 2km and the long one is ~4km, with two river crossings.

Head over early if you fancy a picnic and a paddle by the cool waters of the cataracts.

Run #460: Sunday 8th September 2019 @ Ulu Rening

September 2, 2019 by hashadmin Leave a Comment

AGM run!!!

This month it’s more of a kampung run than a hard-core jungle run (apologies to those who love to get really muddy), but there’s no shortage of nature and good views, and the big kids who love to run fast will find plenty of opportunity for that (the slow ones can just walk as usual!).

The ‘AGM’ aspect is low-key (almost invisible), but anyone wanting to scrutinise our annual accounts can just ask any committee member, and we’re always happy to get volunteers to join the committee or help set runs.

Run-site: Ulu Rening, near Huda’s Haven resort (in the Genting Valley, near Hulu Yam / Batang Kali)
Travel Time: 70 to 80 minutes, depending on starting point
Date: Sunday 8th September, 2019
Registration: 1:00 onwards
Run Starts at: 2:00 pm
Hares: Iris & Zulaika Renshaw

It’s our AGM, and we always expect a big turnout in September, including many first-timers.
But in most ways it’s a normal run:

  • short (around 2km) and long (around 4km) trails
  • cold drinks and hot dogs on sale
  • a stream to cool down in after the run
  • all are welcome
  • as always, everyone needs to register before the run, at our registration desk

Existing members need to renew (RM100 per member), and will get an AGM freebie.
Any new members joining this month pay RM100 membership, plus RM10 joining fee, and get the AGM freebie plus a joining gift.
Guests just pay RM10 (per kid) for the run – we recommend new junior hashers run as guests a few times before deciding if they want to join or not.

The registration desk will be busier than usual, so please arrive early and be patient.

Before the run (at 2pm), there will be some announcements that everyone needs to listen to – especially first timers.
It is essential for everyone (members and guests) to sign in before the run and sign out after the run, so we know that nobody is lost.

Directions:
As with most run-sites, it’s easy to get there if you let Waze or Google Maps help you navigate – just click on the icon below or look up “Huda’s Haven” on Waze:

icon-googlemap

icon-waze

Once you reach the T-junction in Ulu Rening village, turn left and follow brown signs towards “Huda’s Haven” and green signs towards ‘Tanah Perkuburan Islam Kg Hulu Rening Selangor’, until you see our usual KLJHHH bunny signs.
The run site is before a footbridge across the river.
Once you get within around 200m of the footbridge, you need to look for parking beside the track, as there isn’t any big car park at the end. Please stay on public land.

From BATU CAVES:
– Take the B57 Hulu Yam Baharu road.
– Drive pass the Hulu Yam dam and reservoir.
– At Hulu Yam town turn right towards Genting Highlands on B113 and set trip meter to zero.
– 4.4 km Traffic lights, Shell station on Left, turn RIGHT onto B114.
– 5.9 km Turn LEFT (signposted Air Panas Hulu Tamu).
– 10.7 km (T-junction in village) Turn LEFT
– 10.9 km Turn RIGHT
– 11.3 km Turn LEFT
– 11.4 km Turn RIGHT and look for space to park
– 11.6 km Run site

From RAWANG
– Continue north on Highway 1 ( Old Ipoh Road ) through Serendah to Batang Kali.
– At traffic light in Batang Kali turn RIGHT onto B113, and reset your trip-meter.
– 1.9 km At traffic lights (Shell station on right) turn LEFT onto B114.
– 3.4 km Turn LEFT (signposted Air Panas Hulu Tamu).
– 8.2 km (T-junction in village) Turn LEFT
– 8.4 km Turn RIGHT
– 8.8 km Turn LEFT
– 8.9 km Turn RIGHT and look for space to park
– 9.1 km Run site

Run #459: Sunday 4th August 2019 @ Ulu Yam Science School

July 9, 2019 by hashadmin Leave a Comment

Venue: the waterfall behind Hulu Selangor Science School, Ulu Yam

Travel Time: 60-70 minutes

Date: Sunday 4th August, 2019

Run Starts at: 2pm – aim to be there for 1:30 (or come even earlier for a picnic lunch)

Hares: Rosely and French families

This is a popular site that we visit most years, and the small waterfall is perfect for August when our turnout isn’t as high as usual.

The science school is at the junction of Persiaran Antara Gapi and the main Ulu Yam – Batu Caves road, just a couple of km from Ulu Yam Baru town. We take the side road that turns off about 100 metres along Persiaran Antara Gapi, to go behind the school and almost to the new ‘Flamboyant Resort’.

There is a small waterfall with pools above and below it – perfect for splashing around to cool off after the run (short – 2km or long – 4km).

As usual, we will have cold drinks and hot dogs (made with Victoria Crest sausages), so bring a little pocket-money.

Directions:

The run-site is at 3.406167,101.659

If you click one of these icons, it will direct you to the run-site:

icon-googlemap

icon-waze

There are at least 3 good ways to get there, depending on traffic and your starting point:

  • one way is to go up the Batu Dam road behind Batu Caves
  • another is up the old Ipoh Road, and then on the shiny new bypass around Rawang to Serendah
  • a third way is described in detail below:

Via the N-S highway

– Go North (towards Ipoh), and take exit 117, for Sungei Buaya (this is the relatively new exit between Rawang R&R and Bukit Beruntung)

– After the toll, turn left at the traffic lights

– Go straight (winding road) for just over 2km until you reach traffic lights

– Turn right at the lights, towards Serendah/Rawang

– Drive straight for about 3km, passing the Perodua factory, until you hit the old highway 1 at Sungei Choh

– At this junction, keep in the far left lane (there is usually a queue to turn right) and turn left towards Serendah / KKB / Ipoh

– Drive for about 10km until you see a traffic-light junction with colourful new (mostly empty) shop-lots on your left

– Get into the right-hand lane, and turn right at the lights, into Antara Gapi

– Drive along Persiaran Antara Gapi for 5km, until the science school is on your right – this is only about 100 metres before the Ulu-Yam – Batu Caves road, so if you reach that road then you’ve gone a tiny bit too far

– turn sharp right (180 degrees) onto a small road that leads behind the school

– follow this track (and hash signs) until you reach the run-site, by a small bridge across a stream

Follow directions to park considerately.

Run #458, Nambi Estate, near Rasa

June 30, 2019 by hashadmin Leave a Comment

Run-site: Old Nambi Estate, near Rasa (beyond Batang Kali)
Travel Time: 1:10 to 1:20, depending on starting point
Date: Sunday 7th July, 2019
Registration: 1:15 – 1:45 pm
Run Starts at: 2:00 pm
Hares: Oakleyfamily and Frenchfamily

At the run, we will have cold drinks on sale, plus hot dogs (with Victoria Crest sausages).

As usual, all are welcome, including non-members (‘guests’), who can just turn up and go to our registration desk, to sign in and pay the guest fee of RM10 per kid.

It’s essential for everyone (members and guests) to sign in before the run and sign out after the run, so we know that nobody is lost in the deep, dark jungle!

Directions
As with most run-sites, it’s easy to get there if you let Waze or Google Maps help you navigate.

If you click one of these icons, it will direct you to the run-site:

icon-googlemap

icon-waze

But check the proposed route carefully, as it might suggest that you drive 6km along a very rough track from Batang Kali, which was never fun and is no longer safe/passable. To prevent that, simply go via Rasa Chinese Cemetary, which is here:

icon-googlemap

icon-waze

If you follow these instructions, you should find it easily, but we’ll have our usual bunny signs as you get close.

There are a few pot-holes in the last couple of km, but normal cars are fine as long as you take it slow.

For traditionalists, you could follow the directions below (there are also good alternatives, e.g. past Batu Caves and up the new Rawang bypass, or via the N-S highway to Bukit Beruntung):

From KL Head North on NKVE and Exit 117 for Sungei Buaya / Serendah.
Reset Trip Meter at Toll

  • 350m Turn left onto Route 1208
  • Go straight (winding road) for just over 2km until you reach traffic lights
  • Turn right at the lights, towards Serendah/Rawang
  • Drive straight for about 3km, passing the Perodua factory, and keep in the left lane as you approach the old highway 1 at Sungei Choh.
  • Approx 7km: turn left at traffic lights onto route 1, towards Serendah / KKB / Ipoh
  • 26km (just after bridge and road sign to Rasa on left) Turn Right, following hash signs onto gravel road at cemetery.

Follow Hash signs for a further 3.6km, to the run-site.

Run # 457 – 2nd June 2019, Sungei Dua Waterfall

May 14, 2019 by hashadmin Leave a Comment

We’re back at the beautiful waterfall at Sungei Dua.

WhatsApp Image 2018-02-25 at 12.04.34 PM (1)

Venue: Sg.Dua Waterfall, Karak, Pahang
Travel Time: 80+ minutes
Date: Sunday 2nd June 2019
Registration: 13:15 – 13:45
Run Starts at: 14:00
Hare: Grigolo family
Co-Hare: Lai

This time, our run-site is actually down beside the main waterfall – this is different from our last run here, where we parked by the village hall a few hundred metres back down the road.
The road down to the waterfall has been improved since our last visit, but there is only space for one or two cars down there, so most of us will need to park at the top and walk down.
When you get close, look out for the usual yellow bunny hash signs, until you reach a ‘U-turn’ bunny sign which indicates the general area to park in.

The local community makes a small charge for access to this run-site, to fund conservation work (including collecting litter) and keep the numbers of visitors to manageable levels. This is usually collected on the road leading to the run-site, and the hare has discussed a fee of RM2 per adult (nothing for kids), so hopefully that will be the rate on the day. Please tell the person collecting the fee that you are going to a kids’ picnic at the waterfall.

Cold drinks and hotdogs (halal – made from premium Victoria Crest sausages) will be available.

 Directions:

Google Maps

WAZE: Sg.Dua Waterfal

Or easy to follow written instructions.

From KL take the Karak highway E8 and drive towards Karak.

About 42 km after the first toll in KL, arrive at the Bentong toll-gate.

Set the trip meter to zero at the Bentong toll.

14.5 km: Turn off the highway at Exit 813A sign-posted PUSPEN KARAK
When you drive down the slipway, you are in Kampung Cinta Manis.

14.8 km: at the bottom of the exit slipway turn right and go through the tunnel under the highway
Immediately after the tunnel turn right again (effectively a U-turn) and go back on the highway (E8) in the direction of KL

16.1 Km Drive slowly on the highway and keep left. At KP 75.4, exit the highway. This is not an official exit, so keep a close watch.

Climb up a steep slope branching off to the left. After 100 m at the top of the climb, follow hairpin turn right and double back, down the slope and follow the tarmac road.

17 km Cross a bridge, follow tarmac road through a Kampung. The river is on your left hand side.

The road starts to climb after you pass the kampung.

19.3 km You’ll hit another small kampung, with a turning left over a bridge, but we keep straight for about 400m. When you see a track leading down to the left (to the waterfall), look for parking opportunities on the road at the top – don’t try to park down the track towards the waterfall.
